According to analysts, hackers have already sent 41% of stolen crypto acts on Tornado Cash for laundering. At the time of preparation of the report, the attackers transferred more than 35,000 ETT to the mixer.
Before that, hackers brought stolen assets to the decentralized Uniswap exchange and converted them 85 837 ETH. Elliptic noted that this is a fairly common method of laundering stolen means.
Analysts identified several reasons indicating that the North Korean Lazarus was behind the hacking.
They noted that the assets were transferred to Tornado Cash with a regularity that allows us to assume the involvement of some kind of automated. Experts observed a similar system during the laundering of funds stolen during the attack on the Sidchan Ronin. Presumably behind her are also standing hackers Lazarus.
The theft was made by compromising closed keys to the multisig-wallet-probably by attacking social engineering on Harmony team members. Such methods were often used by Lazarus Group, noted in Elliptic.
In addition, Lazarus Group is often aimed at victims in the Asia-Pacific region, analysts say. Many members of the Harmony main team have this region.
Recall, on June 24, the Harmony blockchain platform announced an attack on the Horizon cross-bridge, as a result of which attackers stole assets worth about $ 100 million.
Initially, the Harmony team offered a reward of $ 1 million for the return of stolen funds, later increased it to $ 10 million.
US authorities issued a warning about the threats of North Korean hackers aimed at stealing cryptocurrencies.
